Documenting Layers of History in the Marais

The many shops that now line the streets of Marais, such as Chattawak and ba&sh, reveal the neighborhood’s current status as a major shopping district and its latest layer of development.

This detailed, beautiful ironwork immediately struck me as a layer of the aristocratic past of the Marais.

As I was strolling on Rue des Rosiers in the “Pletzl,” I noticed this mezuzah on a bright blue door frame, which serves as one of many reminders of this quarter’s history as a Jewish district.

This tiny SNEG Syndicat sticker in a restaurant window represents the development of the Marais as a gay neighborhood in the 20th century and the presence of this population today.
